There are many beaches on the island, so we have broken down what makes each beach special. When you stay in one of our Kauai vacation rentals, it should be easy to get to the best beaches on Kauai.

Here are the best beaches and parks to visit when you stay at a Kauai vacation rental.

North Shore Beaches

Haena Beach Park

This area is where the lush jungle meets the white sandy beaches. Mount Makana looms over the beach and is easily recognizable, perfect for photos and sunset backdrops. Haena Beach Park offers swimming and snorkeling when the water conditions are calm. During the winter, the water conditions tend to be rougher and more unsafe to do anything on the beach or in the water. There are lifeguard stations, restrooms, showers, and campsites. A popular attraction is the Maniniholo dry cave across the street from Haena Beach Park. Don’t miss it!

Anini Beach Park

Anini Beach is a 2.5-mile-long beach located on the north side of Kauai. Here, you’ll find white sandy beaches, excellent surf, and a private stretch of coast. Anini offers some of the calmest waters, which makes this beach park perfect for snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and windsurfing. There is no lifeguard at this beach so you will be in the water at your own risk. The water, however, is the most consistent across the island, so you can enjoy all your water activities. Anini Beach Park is typically less crowded than many other beaches on the North Shore, so you can relax with a book and soak in the sun.

Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay is often seen as the ideal Hawaii town. It is a surf town where everyone is laid back, but as it is one of the more popular beaches, it can be tough to avoid the large crowds. Hanalei Pier is located at the mouth of the Hanalei River and fronts the Black Pot Beach Park. Hanalei Bay has amenities like restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, making it ideal for spending the day here with your family. The bay is perfect for swimming, relaxing, surfing, body boarding, fishing, sunset watching, and photography.

East Side Beaches

Lydgate Beach Park

Located on the East side of the Island, Lydgate Beach Park is next to the Wailua River. There is always a lifeguard on duty, so you can swim safely in the ocean. The beach is also perfect for snorkeling, relaxing, and watching the sunrise, making for excellent photography. These waters are protected and often very calm, so it is ideal for all beginners who are looking to learn how to snorkel. With how calm and clear the waters are, you’ll see a lot of fish as you swim through the water! Lydgate Beach Park is perfect for families who want to enjoy a relaxing day by the ocean. You can bring lunch for a full day at the beach at their picnic tables.

This half-mile stretch of beach has gorgeous white sands that hug Highway 56. Kealia Beach Park has amenities like free parking, a lifeguard on duty, showers, restrooms, and picnic tables. This beach is family-friendly and is another perfect spot to spend the day having lunch or watching the sunrise in the early morning. This is a perfect spot to go whale watching in the winter, and in the summer, you can go bodyboarding or surfing.

South Shore Beaches

Poipu Beach Park

This South Shore crescent-shaped beach has crystal clear waters and beautiful white sands. This beach also gives you the opportunity to see monk seals! Since they are on the endangered list, it is best to be mindful of them, stay 100 feet away, and have no flash photography. At Poipu Beach Park, there are lifeguards to keep you safe, picnic facilities for having lunch on the beach, showers, and natural wading pools that are perfect for the kids. For older children and beginner surfers, there is a designated bodyboarding area. This beach is also a perfect site for surfing and snorkeling since the water is crystal clear.

West Side Beaches

Salt Pond Beach Park

Salt Pond Beach Park is always one of the top picks for family-friendly beaches. Children and parents will love this beach for the ability to relax while time slips away. Salt Pond has a long stretch of white sand and calm waters, so everyone can have fun doing something there. Many locals break Salt Pond into three areas. They consist of the main bay, the baby ponds, and the airport side. The main bay is deeper than the rest of the park and is great for swimming laps. The baby pond has a large natural reef formation and is shallow enough for kids to easily run around and play. On the far-left side of the park is the airport side, so named because it’s right next to the airport strip. This area has a pond perfect for snorkeling and walking along the beach.

Kekaha Beach

Located at the end of a 15-mile stretch of beach is Kekaha Beach. If you’re a surfer, then this beach is most definitely for you! From what used to be an old military base, surfers will take up the waves near the old rifle range, targets, and whispering sands. The beach is also popular among fishermen, joggers, and other beachcombers. You’ll find amenities like restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on duty. Since this beach is on the west side of the island, it is perfect for photographing and watching beautiful Hawaiian sunsets. There are also picnic areas around this beach park, making it great for lunch out by the water.
