Poipu Beach, located on the island’s Southside, is one great option for surfers regardless of their skill level. Hanalei Bay is another excellent choice, and you will likely end up going there anyway simply because it’s so popular! Kalapaki Beach, Kaihuna Beach, and Kahili Beach (also called Rock Quarry) are other notable options for your surfing experience.
Surf Lessons
If you’re not ready to head out to the water on your own, consider taking surf lessons in Kauai! There are tons of great companies across the island that are experienced working with beginners, so you’ll feel confident and in control, as you hop on the board for the first time.
For instance, Kauai Vacation Activities is one of the most notable companies offering surf lessons for those who are surfing for the first time or haven’t been on the board in a while. All of the coaches who work here are local experts who will show you the ropes from start to finish, teaching you how to get on and off the board, master the techniques necessary to ride the waves, and have fun while you’re at it!
When you take lessons from Kauai Vacation Activities, your experience can last anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. If you’re open to a group lesson, you’ll pay $85 per person. You can also opt for a semi-private lesson for $125 per person or a completely private class for $175 per person. Each of these options includes a surfboard, leash, and surf shirt.
You may also be interested in learning from Kauai Surf School, which has offered lessons to visitors since 1999. All classes here are limited to just four people or fewer, meaning that you’ll always get the personal attention you need to feel confident when surfing for the first time. Kids and adults alike are welcome to take part in these lessons, as long as they know how to swim. During your class, you’ll learn all about the ocean, staying safe in the water, and nailing the basic surfing techniques.
Lessons are available at 8 a.m., 12 noon, and 2 p.m. 1.5-hour group lessons are available for $75 per person. You can also opt for a semi-private lesson (2-3 people) for $300 or a completely private lesson for $250. They even offer kids’ private lessons for surfers aged 4-12; these lessons cost $200 for a private experience or $300 for two kids.

What to Expect
