The Top Places to Go Hiking During Your Kauai Vacation

When you’re planning a stay in our Kauai condo rentals, you’re going to have plenty of access to the beauty of nature. Of course, you can spend your days enjoying the surf and sand at the beach, but remember that Kauai is nicknamed “the Garden Isle” for a reason! There are all kinds of breathtaking natural sights all around the island, and one of the best ways to experience them is with a hike. Whether you’re new to hiking or consider it one of your favorite hobbies, you’re sure to enjoy the Kauai, Hawaii hiking you find in these parks!

Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park

na pali coast

The Na Pali Coast is easily one of the most recognizable stretches of shoreline globally, having been featured in major motion pictures such as Tropic Thunder, King Kong, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Suppose you want a hiking experience that provides incredible views of the water and waterfalls, narrow valleys, and plenty of other exciting sights on land. In that case, the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park is the place to go.

When you head to this state park, you can take a hike along the Kalalau Trail. This trail is considered one of the world’s most adventurous hiking trails and will likely take a full day to complete, so it’s certainly not for the faint of heart. However, if you want a less strenuous journey, you can take on the first two miles of the trail, which leads from Haena State Park to Hanakapi’ai Beach.

Currently, guests who want to visit the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park must make advanced reservations, which can be done online.

Waimea Canyon State Park

For a truly unique view of the island of Kauai, don’t miss a trip to the Waimea Canyon State Park. This destination is home to one of the most popular attractions on the island: Waimea Canyon. When you explore the Kauai hiking trails here, you’ll have tons of plant and animal life to observe, as well as some of the most impressive natural sights that the state of Hawaii has to offer.

You can hike two trails when you come here: the Iliau Nature Loop and the Kukui Trail. The Iliau Nature Loop takes you just 0.3 miles and is considered easy, so families and individuals of all ages and skill levels can feel confident hiking here. Throughout the trail, you’ll come face-to-face with tons of native plant life, as well as incredible views of both Waimea Canyon and Waialae Canyon.

If you’re looking for a bit more of a challenge, take on the Kukui Trail. This trail is 2.5 miles one way and is considered quite complicated, so it’s only recommended for experienced hikers. You’ll experience an elevation difference of more than 2,200 feet as you make your way down (and back up) the west side of the Waimea Canyon.

Haena State Park

Haena State Park

Located just a few minutes from our Kauai North Shore vacation rentals in Haena State Park, a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. This park is situated along the Na Pali Coast and is the home of the trailhead of Kalalau Trail (which we mentioned in the first section, remember?).

As we mentioned, the first two miles of the Kalalau Trail lead from Haena State Park’s Ke’e Beach to Hanakapi’ai Valley. But if you head past that, you can come to a beautiful waterfall in the valley itself. If you want to continue past the valley, note that you will need to obtain an overnight camping permit since this trail takes so long to complete in its entirety. Experienced hikers will need at least eight hours to make a round trip from the State Park to Hanakoa.

Once you make your way out of the valley, you can find yet another trail that leads you to Kalalau Beach for a five-mile journey. Though the trek might be challenging, hikers are sure to be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Kalalau Valley and its coastline.

Polihale State Park

Last but not least, those interested in Kauai hiking tours may want to make their way to Polihale State Park. This area has a stunning beach, but if you’re going to make the most of your time here, challenge yourself to the 10.4-mile out-and-back trail. You’ll find breathtaking native flower varieties as well as incredible views of the water every step of the way.

Although this trail is quite lengthy, it’s considered easy and is great for all ages and skill levels. A bumpy dirt road will bring you onto the beach itself, so be sure to drive slowly when you’re approaching. Many visitors note that this area is less crowded than more popular tourist destinations, so if you’re looking for a more secluded hiking experience, Polihale State Park might be the spot for you.

Of all the fun things to do in Kauai, hiking can be one of the most memorable. Spend some time out on the trails to see some gorgeous sights and spend quality time with your friends and loved ones.
