Perfect Retreat for Large Families! 2026-05-03

Our stay here was absolutely fantastic, especially for a group of our size. If you are looking for a spot to host a large family gathering, this house is a dream.

The absolute highlight of the home is the lanai. It quickly became our favorite spot; it’s the perfect setting for everyone to sit around, catch up, and enjoy the breeze. We spent hours out there just talking and relaxing together.

For those who love to cook, the well-equipped kitchen made it incredibly easy to prepare large family meals. We never felt like we were lacking a specific tool or enough space to get dinner on the table for everyone.

To top it all off, the location is unbeatable—the beaches are within easy walking distance, making it simple for people to head down to the sand whenever they like without needing to coordinate cars. Highly recommended for any family looking for a stress-free and spacious getaway!

Beautiful home in south Kauai 2026-03-15

We rented this beautiful home with 2 adults and 7 young adults. The location is great and I can’t say enough about the front porch. It’s large and beautiful and has 2 big round tables with chairs and a couch. We spent a lot of time out there!! It is across the street from the ocean and we even saw whales from the porch. The rooms are beautiful and beds are comfortable. We did have an issue with the AC that could not be fixed while we were there. It took a couple of days to get someone out to look at it but the finally did and could not immediately get the part needed. The bedrooms stayed very cold and main living area got a bit warm. The owners were very generous and refunded half of our rental cost which we greatly appreciated. I would definitely recommend this home as it is beautiful.. We also cooked at this home a couple of nights and it had everything you might need. Plenty of beach chairs, umbrellas and beach towels.

Outstanding! There were 10 of us for the week oF Feb 13-20. The house was even better than described. So many thoughtful touches. The amazing kitchen was fully equiped & a blast to cook & eat in. The living room was very comfortable but frankly we spent most of our time on the patio watching people, whales & sunsets. The bedrooms/bathrooms were comfortable & spacious, We ran the up & downstairs A/C units some during the day but the front & back windows provided plenty of cross wind cooling at night. Location was ideal with easy access to the Sheraton & Poipu beaches complete with Green Sea Turtles & Monk Seals. There was lots of walkable shopping, dining & happy hours. The beach equipment in the garage was a pleasant surprise. There were wagons to haul stuff as well as umbrellas, fins & beach shoes. (the beaches are rockier than they look so use the shoes) We can't say enough about Angela & the ReMax folks. They were prompt at getting back to us to resolve any issues. We had a cooling issue with the refridgerator & they had a repair person there within a couple hours & kept bringing him back until the issue was resolved.

Wonderful Birthday Trip 2024-09-16

We loved our stay in Malakae! It was spacious, had incredible views, plenty of amenities and beach necessities, and was walking distance to shops/restaurants/the Wednesday farmers market. We had 10 people and were more than comfortable. Our favorite part of the house was the lanai, where we watched the sunset every night, ate dinner, and played games. We couldn’t have asked for a better stay.

Each of the 5 bedrooms had their own bathroom which was perfect for the 9 of us. A few things were a little tricky like the stove top extra hot, flat top got too hot and the dishwasher needed to be turned on and off several times before a cycle could be picked. Overall it was a great place to stay.

What a great house to relax with family. Literally across the street from the ocean, within easy walking distance to several beautiful resorts and beaches. Easy drive to Koloa oldtown and Poipu for restaurants and shopping. Property management was first class, very responsive and helpful. The layout of the house was perfect for 3 couples with 2 toddlers. Free concierge service helped us secure tickets and passes to make our stay even more memorable. Great Location, Perfect Spaces 2025-03-20

The property was better than the on-line photographs depict. The overall experience was excellent, the property managers were responsive to the issues we experienced, and the home was well-appointed.

A few things to note:
1 - We enjoy cooking and although the kitchen was well stocked with supportive equipment, the knives were disappointingly dull. Great 6 burner cooktop and dual dishwashers!
2 - Be prepared for significant foot traffic along the driveway during sunset / golden hour given the great location. It’s easy to walk to the location with the crowds (right across the street) or watch the sunset from the balconies from two of the upstairs bedrooms.

We would recommend the South Side of Kauai and if you have a large group, this is the property for you. We would definitely stay again - 5/5!!!

Our extended family of 9 really enjoyed the location and the amenities of this house. The location in Kauai is great, convenient to snorkeling and beaches within walking distance. The spacious house had everything we needed. Five bedrooms and five baths worked out perfectly to give people privacy, but the common area is and the beach equipment in the garage made hanging out together great.

We stayed at this property in July'21. The property was well maintained and very spacious for a party of nine. The house had all the amenities needed for the week and more. The house is within walking distance of a nice beach and the kids enjoyed using the body boards provided. I would highly recommend this property and would book it again in the future.

We've just returned from a wonderful multi-generational family gathering in Kauai and have decided that Makalae was the perfect holiday home for us. The proximity to beaches, sunset viewing, and a large grassy field for the kids to tear around on were all appreciated. The home is spacious and well equipped with everything we needed. Angela at ReMax was very responsive to any questions or requests that we had. We very much appreciate that we were allowed to rebook our stay after a postponement due to covid.

Tha Makalae house we rented in Kauai was terrific. It had a great layout and was perfect for the 5 couples in out group. The 5 bed/bathrooms was great as everyone had their own space. Downfall was the 2 double beds. That did not deter from the rental. The porch was fantastic to watch the sunset and the kitchen was a dream. We would definitely recommend this house and rent it again if the opportunity arises. Less rain on this side of the island and up close and personal with the turtles. What a delight.

The house was even better than described. It worked great for our family of 7 including a baby that go their own room. The garage was stocked with beach chairs, towels fins, snorkels boogie boards... we didnt have to buy a thing for the beach. We brought the whole family Kauai to enjoy a week together. The home easily accommodated 8 adults. The location is fantastic with gorgeous ocean views. This home had many amenities including a gourmet kitchen and Weber babrbeque that allowed us to eat in for most of our trip. The house also included many of the beach toys and supplies needed for a day of play in the ocean. I would love to return to this house again.

Family trip of a lifetime! 2023-06-15

This was a family reunion of 9 adults. We were celebrating many missed celebrations plus two wedding announcements. We had plenty of space, house was very clean. The towels for both the bathrooms and the beach were very good quality. Linens on the beds were clean and good quality. I normally do not like to utilize the soaps offered but they were also high quality and smelled great! Two sets of washers and dryers plus two dish washers - awesome! The house is gorgeous! The location is great. Everyone had a great time. Every couple had their own bathrooms, the kitchen was well stocked. sitting on the deck in the morning enjoying the beautiful view and drinking coffee - an awesome way to start the day. Grill is again high quality like all of the kitchen appliances! I was worried about having enough hot water for everyone's showers and there were no problems at all. The fans helped circulate the air and the air conditioning worked great! We would all come back to this house if we could. Thank you for sharing this with our family.

The management company was very responsive to any questions we had. Beds were great and gathering space was also great for our adult children and spouses. Large kitchen with plenty of room at the dining table. Also enjoyed eating on the deck. Amazing location for sunsets and walking distance to snorkeling at Koloa Landing, which was one of the best snorkeling locations! Enjoyed easy access to Koloa for dining out and shopping.

This house was perfect for our party of 7. The house was super clean. We did not utilize the fully stocked kitchen because we ate out, but nice to have for those who choose to cook. The lanai was great to just sit and relax and enjoy the view of the ocean. The air conditioning made us comfortable while in the house. Close to shops and restaurants. Nice touch to have beach towels, boogie boards, umbrellas and a wagon to use. Angela at ReMax was responsive to my inquiries. Great customer service! My family has been going to Kauai for about 7 years and this is absolutely the nicest house we have stayed at.

Poipu Beach house 2023-11-14

We enjoyed our visit to this lovely home. It is as described and was very comfortable for our group of 6. It was a great location although it was a little drive to the actual beach area. We loved walking to the end of the driveway to look at the water, sunset, turtles and dolphins. There is a hotel on the same driveway that does bring some walking traffic by the house often but wasn’t a big problem. Overall I would recommend this home for a very family friendly vacation in beautiful Kauai.

Fantastic escape! 2023-10-01

We were 9 women, surfers, snorkelers, hikers, and more, and we could not have been more pleased with our stay at Makalae!. The kitchen was well stocked with all we needed. The beds were comfortable. There was plenty of room for us to spread out after a day of activity, and the a/c worked like gangbusters. It was also gorgeous. The pictures do not exaggerate. Would highly recommend!

Excellent place to stay for vacation. Family had plenty of room to have their own space (with bedrooms and separate bathrooms). It would have been better if refrig worked better (needed to be colder and ice maker did not work). Training on how to work AC might have been helpful...we had no idea that master bedroom controlled all AC in other bedrooms until we called property management. You made it easy to get key with lockbox. Thank you for a nice place to stay!

A Perfect Place for a Family Reunion 2015-09-13

You can not find a better place to enjoy Hawaii as a family. With 5 bedrooms, each with their own bath, our family had enough space to spread out and enjoy some privacy amidst the family reunion. The upper floors have a dynamic view of the ocean. The house includes two high-end washer and dryers and two dishwashers which for a family of 10 adults was a must! The large stovetop even includes a griddle for a morning of pancakes. There are two large living areas, one up and one down, with large screen televisions in both. The garage is full of boogie boards, snorkel gear, children's reef-runners, beach chairs, umbrellas, and even a nice rolling cooler. There is a gas grill on the deck. The only drawback to the house is the condos being built right along the driveway; however, they do not obscure the view, and we found the noise indistinguishable when in the house with the air conditioner running. The workers are not there on the weekend and leave at the end of the day. We were out having fun most of the time they were working, so no one complained in our party about it at all. This house is built for a family. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Fabulous Home 2017-01-02

Our family of 7 adults spent an amazing Christmas staying in Makalae. I needn't have worried about cooking Christmas dinner - the kitchen is a chef's dream and the 2 dishwashers make cleaning up a breeze. We gathered each morning on the lanai for breakfast to plan our day. There is excellent snorkeling at Koala Landing, a 3 min walk. We saw sea turtles in the rocky cove across the street and enjoyed the sandy beach which was a 10 min walk. Each of the 5 bedrooms was spacious with its own bathroom. The garage is stocked with beach equipment, and another big plus for a large family were the 2 washers and dryers ! We hope to return again to the beautiful home in the future.

We had a great time at the Makale. We were 10 adults and the house having 5 bedrooms worked out very well. The house is in a great location and is very well equipped. Luxurious with many nice amenities although there are a few things that now require some attention. Overall highly recommend the Makale.

There were 10 adults and we thoroughly enjoyed the house. It was everything in the description. And right across the street from the best snorkeling...lots of turtles and a monk seal. It is close to grocery stores and fun shops. A little walk, anout 1/2 mile, to a sandy beach. The house had everything we wanted!

This is an outstanding home and we had an amazing time here! Perfect location to everything, beautiful views from all three upstairs bedrooms, and plenty of space for everyone. I stayed with my entire family, six adults and two young children, we were all very comfortable in the cozy soft beds and had enough space for privacy. Overall, a perfect place to stay, would definitely recommend and will probably try and stay here again. Only complaint isn't much of one, you can tell the home has been rented frequently and it needs some very minor tweaking (just a simple visit from a handyman) as many door handles, bathroom hardware, kitchen faucet, etc. are loose. Overall, very comfortable home with even better location!

We spent a week with kids and grandkids--six adults and four children, and we have only good things to say. The house was in good condition, there was plenty of room for all of us, the location was great and there was a very nice view of the ocean. We especially loved the large lanai, which had enough tables and chairs to accommodate all of us for meals or just visiting. We didn't need much help from the property manager, but they were pleasant and responsive when we did contact them. We heartily recommend this property.

We came home to Kauai (Born and raised on Kauai) to buried our mom. My brother from Oklahoma with is 18 yr old son, my son and his family from Las Vegas and my husband I from Oahu and my brother Dominic from Hanapepe.
when we checked in. My family and I were Breathless having a 5 bedroom and 5 bath house with a large Kitchen and dining area and 2 living room. we like the outside patio as we did a cookout Friday night (Family bonding) and Saturday night (Family night).
This is just as once in a lifetime that I treated my family to an elegant vacation home. It was worth it!! and YES our family bonded.

We celebrated our 30th anniversary with our kids and friends. The house is perfect for large gatherings. We had 8 adults and an infant and had plenty of room. Great kitchen and BBQ to save a few bucks on meals. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance. The beaches are within a 10 minute walk or quick drive. Coolers, umbrellas, sand toys, body boards and a wagon to haul to the beach are available. Awesome sunsets!!

We had the best time staying in the beautiful Makalae. It was centrally located to get to so many of our favorite beaches and places on Kauai. It was very clean and comfortable for our party of 7. It was about a 10-15 minute walk to a sandy beach; or you could walk across the street to see the sunset. The kitchen had everything we needed. A wonderful stay!

THE GOOD
- Huge. Beautiful. Clean. Well kept.
- Very well stocked in terms of cooking and cleaning supplies, towels and sheets, and beach supplies.
- Amazing views of the ocean.
- 5 minute walk to a fantastic sandy beach, three lovey restaurants, and two shopping centres.
- Good customer service. We had a couple of toilet issues, and a plumber was there less than 24 hours later and fixed it all with no trouble.

TO KNOW
- The electric layout of this house is odd. For example, the front porch has six lights: three controlled from the master bedroom and three from a random light switch by the back door. Prepare to search for light switches throughout your stay.
- The AC units worked very well. However, the master bedroom controls the AC for all the bedrooms upstairs too, and must be set at 72 to make sure the upstairs AC units actually shut off in the night. Until we figured this out, people upstairs slept in sweatshirts bought at Wal Mart and under house-provided fleece blankets to stay warm. So, set the master bedroom thermostat to 72 (not 70 or 71) and everyone will be fine.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS: This place is VERY hard to find when arriving the first time, particularly in the dark. (After finding it once, it's easy thereafter). DO AND READ THE FOLLOWING, AND YOU WILL ARRIVE AT THE PLACE MUCH FASTER THAN WE DID: Don't rely on GPS. There is no address marker at the road. The ReMax driving instructions/GPS will get you to Hoonani Road from the airport with no issues. On Hoonani Road, TURN LEFT AT THE SIGN FOR THE "HOLOHOLO GRILL". The driveway is pavers, not asphalt, and is across from a lookout point with a single row of parking spots.

BOTTOM LINE: We would recommend this place to others without hesitation. We'd also tell them to a) bring sweatshirts and b) write down/print the driving instructions above, to ensure overall maximum comfort and limited stress levels.

Great location and a wonderful house. Two complaints. One is that they photo shopped out the telephone pole and wires in the web site pictures but no big deal. The other was that one of the showers was not operable. I had to go to the hardware store to buy an Allen wrench to fix it. I was told I would be reimbursed but haven't been yet.

I would like to personally apologize on behalf of RE/MAX Kauai for the inoperable shower during your stay and that it caused you an inconvenience. I do show that you were reimbursed on April 6, 2016. If you have not seen this credit, I suggest you contact your credit card company immediately. As for the photo shopped telephone pole, I'm surprised to hear this as we don't photo shop our photos other than to add more light. I will look into the photo and have it corrected. We prefer our guest see exactly what they are getting. I am happy that you otherwise enjoyed your stay on the beautiful island of Kauai. -Tamee D.

Nice house 2018-05-21

The house was nice, however when we arrived the entire porch and front door was covered in spider webs so it was difficult to enter the house. We thought since check in was so late there would've been an opportunity to clear those out to prepare for our arrival. The ensuite bathrooms were very nice. Not all of the bedrooms have connected bathrooms, the downstairs bedroom is close to the only shared bathroom on the main floor, which is used by everyone, so none of the adults in our party wanted that room. The house could use a second fridge or a larger fridge. With a party of 10 we had lots of food and found the fridge a challenge. The kitchen also lacked tupperware for leftovers, and didn't have basic spices (like salt) which was a bummer, but had tons of pots/pans which was appreciated. We also enjoyed having 2 dishwashers and 2 washers/dryer. The house also came with ample outdoor gear and a wagon to haul your stuff down to the beach. Nice location as you could always walk across the street and see sea turtles in the ocean. Be sure to wear bug spray on the patio as we got DESTROYED by mosquitos. The walls are fairly thin so if you will be hanging out on the patio at night, give some thought to who will have the suite that is connected to the porch, you can hear everything from the people outside. All in all a good stay - we always had enough places to sit and hang out with our large party. Thank you for offering the military discount.

We had a group of 8 in the house and had plenty of room. There was an issue with the front door that maintenance took care of the next day. Beautiful sunsets every night. Great location near sandy beaches, restaurants and shops.
