While you’re here, you’ll probably want to soak in as much of the area’s natural beauty as possible.

There are many breathtaking sights on the island, most of which can be seen by taking hikes to various points of interest. Visiting some of the area’s stunning waterfalls should be at the top of your list of things to do in Kauai.

Wailua Falls

Called Kauai’s Twin Falls, Wailua Falls is a double-tiered waterfall and is considered one of the best waterfalls in Kauai. Located at the south end of the Wailua River, the falls cascade in two streams, dropping 85 feet below into a 30-foot pool. The falls can be seen from the road, and it’s easily accessible, so no hiking is required!

It’s one of the most recognized waterfalls in the world because it was used in the opening credits of “Fantasy Island.” It’s also been used in many publications over the years to describe Kauai’s beauty. To get to Wailua Falls, head north from Lihu’e and follow Ma’alo road in Hanama’ulu. If you arrive early in the morning, you might see a rainbow as the sunlight peeks through the mist, giving you a fantastic photo opportunity. It would be best if you did not try to hike to the bottom or jump from the top; the safest place to enjoy the falls is from the overlook.

Waipoo Falls

Waipoo Falls is an 800-foot cascading waterfall that can be seen from various points along Canyon road on the west side of Kuaui, near Waimea. The hike through Halemanu Canyon is one of the best hikes in Kauai and a popular hike for families. It’s also a beautiful spot for birdwatching and breathtaking views.

The waterfall can be viewed from one of the lookouts along the Waimea Canyon or can be experienced by hiking the trail to the top. You’ll only be able to see the first 25 feet of the waterfall, but the hike itself is beautiful and worth the trip. If you decide to check out the falls from a distance, the first lookout is along Highway 550, past mile marker 10. The second one is past mile marker 13 and gives a closer look at the falls. Either place makes for a great photo opportunity. Whichever way you choose to take in the falls’ beauty, you’ll get a much better view if you visit during the cooler months because the falls tend to dry up in the warmer weather.

Hanakapiai Falls

The hike to Hanakapiai Falls is one of the most popular hikes on Kauai. It’s bucket list worthy and should only be taken on by serious hikers. It’s a long, sometimes dangerous, trek about five miles from the parking lot to the waterfall. Many hikers choose to stay at Hanakapiai Beach once they reach it, which is only a two-mile hike.

From there, it’s a few more strenuous hours to reach the falls, which involve multiple stream crossings and a trip through mountain apple trees and a bamboo forest. The reward at the end of your hike is a stunning 300-foot waterfall and a refreshing dip in the pool at the bottom. The weather can be unpredictable, so pack rain gear and bring plenty of water to drink because drinking from the streams is unsafe. Look into further safety precautions before you take on this particular hike.

Parking here can be tricky as it’s a small lot, so be prepared to park along the road or take the Kaua’i shuttle. There is an entrance fee that needs to be booked in advance and a fee to take the shuttle if you want to avoid taking your chances with parking.

Secret Falls

Uluwehi Falls (aka Secret Falls) should be on your must-see waterfalls list when visiting Kauai. Only accessible by water, this secret waterfall is located in the Wailua River basin on Kauai’s east side. While this natural wonder is best seen by guided tours, individuals wishing to go it alone can rent a kayak from a local company. This trip includes a 45 minute kayak up the river and a 20 minute hike through the rainforest.

Take in the wildlife and the beautiful views on your Kauai hike, and then enjoy a swim once you arrive. The weather can change quickly on the island, so take care to watch for slippery rocks, mud, and protruding roots. Be advised that winds and heavy rainfall can affect the conditions of your kayak, making it dangerous to travel alone. Make sure to take every safety precaution while taking in this secret beauty.

This 151-foot-tall and 40-foot-wide waterfall is situated so that it’s a quick and easy stop for a great photo opportunity.
