If cave exploration is your idea of an exciting vacation, then Kauai is the place for you. Kauai caves provide a unique and exciting activity for your Hawaiian vacation. It’s the perfect choice for the entire family and provides a glimpse into a world many people never get to explore.
Take a trip to the geological past when you visit the Kauai caves at the Makauwahi Cave Reserve!
Where is It?
You can reach the Makauwahi Cave Reserve two different ways. The first way is by the 2-mile coastal trail from Shipwrecks beach. The second option is a drive through a private property followed by a short hike.
From your Kauai beachfront rental, find Poipu Road and go past the golf course about two miles until you reach a crossroads with gates straight ahead and on the left. Turn right and follow along until you see a green gate with a shack on the right.
Just past the shack, turn right and drive along the edge of the field and then park on the left side at the bottom of the field, just past signpost 18. Be mindful not to block the road. From there, follow the trail across a small bridge, and you will see a signpost marked 15. There is a small entrance, but if you stay low, you will emerge into sunlight and a magnificent view!

Explore the Cave
The cave and the surrounding area are all worth seeing. The land around the caves is all part of a restoration program that has seen plants and animals return to the area.
Inside the cave, it will seem very tight and claustrophobic for some at first, but if you persevere, you will soon be rewarded. The sinkhole at the end provides fresh water, and the view of a natural amphitheater is connected to a magnificent garden and decorative walls.
Due to the limestone, all types of fossils are perfectly preserved. Everything that passed through, from small bones to leaves and seeds. It paints a beautiful picture of a time gone by in perfect detail.
